A red fan shell motif decorates the edge of this set of four dinner plates. Exclusively handpainted in Caldas da Rainha for Casa by JJ, the brushstrokes suggest the history of the earthenware from this Portuguese city. This particular motif has been practised in the region since the 18th century, longingly referring to the sea. Pair with the side plates in red from the Cara collection, or try pairing it with the green version.

There are objects you acquire, and objects that arrive. This is the latter. Some tablecloths cover a table. This one transforms it. Hand block-printed by artisans in Rajasthan using carved wooden blocks and a tradition that has barely changed in five hundred years, our Palm Tree tablecloth turns an ordinary surface into something guests talk about long after dinner is over. The pattern — sweeping palms, rich ground, the slightly imperfect repeat that only a human hand can produce — is bold enough to anchor a whole room and considered enough to live with every week. This is our most popular tablecloth. It is the tablecloth that people come back and buy again for someone else.

The windowsill that has held the same vase for three summers. Hand-painted by local artisan. Designed in Amsterdam, each piece carries the slightly uneven brushwork that comes from a single pair of hands — the terracotta and blue drawn from the southern Italian coast, interpreted through a northern European eye. A placemat does a quiet job. It protects the table, defines the setting, gives the eye somewhere to land before the food arrives. Most placemats do only that. These do considerably more. The Amalfi Coast collection draws on the colours of the southern Italian coast at its most itself — the terracotta and blue, the lemon grove yellows, the faded grandeur of a cliff-side villa — and brings them to a set of six placemats that make an ordinary weeknight table feel like somewhere you actually want to sit. They come as a set of six because a table set for six deserves to look complete. And because once you have one set, you will understand why people come back for two.

Buds in May — Hand-Painted Lunch Plates Inspired by Matisse Set of 4

£51 GET 15% OFF WITH MEMBERSHIP

Each plate is painted by hand. No two are exactly alike. Henri Matisse spent his winters in Nice, following the light south when the rest of France went grey. He sat at the edge of his bed in the Hôtel de la Méditerranée, watching the sun come in, picking up his brush. We think this is how he would have taken his lunch — plates full of colour, a table set with joy rather than formality. The Buds in May plates are our homage to that instinct. Hand-painted in rich, expressive glazes on shaped stoneware, each one carries the slight variations that come from being made by a single pair of hands. The brushwork is visible. The glaze catches the light differently depending on where the plate sits. That is not inconsistency — that is how you know it is real. At 22cm, they work beautifully as starter plates, lunch plates, or alongside a dinner plate for a more layered table. Food-safe and dishwasher-safe, because beautiful things are made to be used. This is a plate for people who believe lunch deserves as much care as dinner.Care instructions: Dishwasher safe only

In 1291, Venice moved its glassmakers to the island of Murano and made them an offer with no exit: noble privileges, freedom from prosecution — and confinement. Their techniques were too valuable to let travel. For centuries, a Murano glassmaker who left the island risked death. The knowledge stayed, deepened, and became the lineage that produces this piece: hand-blown, globe-formed, the green drawn through the glass rather than applied to it. At 28cm, it is a great addition to any collection.

There is a monkey riding an ostrich through the Saharan dunes, and he looks entirely unbothered. This is the energy. It is the one people walk over to. The one guests ask about before they have even sat down. The one that tells you — quietly but clearly — that the person who lives here has a point of view.

In 11th-century Sicily, under Arab rule, a young maiden fell for a noble Moor passing by her balcony. Their romance was doomed—he had a wife and children back home. Furious at his betrayal, she beheaded him and used his skull as a planter, ensuring he remained with her forever. This legend gave rise to Sicily’s tradition of ornate, head-shaped pots, now cherished as striking décor—whether for plants, fruit, or potpourri—captivating guests just as the maiden once captivated her ill-fated lover.

The set of 4 shell motif arrived in European decorative arts long before Botticelli painted Venus, ultimately popularised by the ceramic workshops of Portugal, France, and Italy, where the painters captured the sense of freedom of the coast. The fan shell in particular — symmetrical, ribbed, opening like a small theatre curtain, has been running along the rims of the finest Portuguese earthenware since the eighteenth century. Hand painted exclusive to Casa by Josephine JennoPairs perfectly with our Cara Shell Side Plate, Green
