This candleholder was designed in our Chelsea studio, and handpainted in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. Combining two design sensibilities, the timeless design of this particular piece places it perfectly atop your table.

Decorated by hand with vertical lines that extend from the base in varying heights, the red tone can complement your existing tableware, or pair it with other pieces from the Cara Collection.

Inspiration
Handcrafted pottery has a kinship with an unassuming region of Portugal. Begun by a humble maker throwing kitchenware in the 18th century, the tradition can be attributed to the earth the province is built on. Clay is harvested from the ground and shaped by hand in Caldas da Rainha. Artisans paint it by hand and glaze it, using the same practices that have been passed down across generations of families.

The particular motifs within this design and the Cara Collection evoke the country’s relationship with nature. From the Atlantic, which so much of its culture depends upon, to the abundant produce of the soils, the Oeste region is an example of society thriving when it lives with nature.
Collectors Questions

Q: How do I remove wax from a candleholder without damaging it?

A: The easiest method: place the candleholder in the freezer for 20–30 minutes. The wax will shrink and lift cleanly away from the surface with a fingernail or wooden skewer — no scraping or soaking required. For any residue, a cloth with a little olive oil loosens wax from painted or glazed surfaces without scratching. Never use abrasive cleaners on hand-painted pieces.

Q: Is the candle holder meant to be used on the table with the tableware, or displayed separately?

A: It's designed to sit directly on the table alongside the plates and bowls from the same collection - placed among the tableware, it carries the pattern through to the centrepiece so the table reads as one considered composition.

Q: How should the candle holder be cleaned, given it's not washed the way plates are?

A: Since it isn't used for food, a soft, damp cloth is usually all it needs day-to-day. If it does need a fuller wash, follow the same gentle approach as the rest of the collection — low heat, mild detergent, no heated drying, hand-washing preferred.

Q: Does the candle holder match the glaze and pattern of the plates in the same collection?

A: Yes — it's drawn from the same glaze and design as the rest of its collection, so it's made to sit naturally alongside the dinner plates, side plates, and bowls rather than as a separate decorative object.

Q: Is the candle holder a good gift on its own?

A: Yes — it's a lovely, self-contained gift for someone who already collects the range, or as a smaller, more affordable way to introduce someone to a collection before they commit to the full table setting.
