Inspiration
While staying in Amsterdam, JJ fell in love with (among other things) the Delft pottery on display in the Rijksmuseum. The beauty and charm of the pieces on display captivated her, much like the city itself.
Why Delft though? It has long been a hub for pottery, as it has good local sources of clay and fuel. But the leap to fame came after the death of the Chinese emperor led to a supply shortage of Chinese porcelain - which was in extremely high demand. They couldn't make porcelain themselves exactly, but they could use a tin glaze to make their pottery look incredibly similar. In the end, Delft filled the market niche for Asian goods so well that even once trade resumed, Delft held sway over the trade.
Delftware is iconic, beloved by many, and the reason? The same as it always was: it looks great. The fusion of Western craftsmanship with Eastern inspiration has resulted in timeless pieces that work in all kinds of interiors. These plates will only look complete when serving up some jam & crumpets, or perhaps marmalade on toast. We love a chinoiserie breakfast.
