As a major port of call on the maritime Silk Road, Hoi An was always fated to be a cosmopolitan powerhouse. JJ has fond memories of a town beaming with civic pride, where many people still wear traditional Vietnamese clothes. She took inspiration from the old townhouses for her own home in New York, melding Japanese, Chinese and Dutch influences – a continuation of that multicultural tradition.
What does any of that have to do with a stool? Well, rattan is an important south-east Asian material, and JJ first got to grips with it in Hoi An. It’s so strong and lightweight, they even used to use it to make shields! This stool also has many uses. Coffee table, plant stand, spare chair, dressing table stool… It’s so light and easy to move, it could be all of these at a moment’s notice!
