The daughter of a gardener, Angela Veronese was a working-class poet. At a time when most writers were noblemen and the occasional highborn woman, Veronese was an exception. She knew herself. She was sincere and wrote with an authenticity that rang true to her audience, displaying an empathy that they could connect to. In 1826, she wrote her autobiography - the first of its kind amongst women in Italy - further demonstrating her skill for self-assessment whilst still being enthralling. The gardener's offspring grew strong, and her reach exceeded far beyond what was expected. She became an icon in her own right - often improvising her work and performing to ecstatic crowds - a figure of celebrity, made by her brilliant mind.
