Inspiration
The designs on Chinese plates are often imbued with greater meaning. Tall tales and grand legends take shape in brilliant blues and greens. But sometimes, we want a change of pace, something more relaxed. What could be more delightfully simple than a butterfly in a garden?
The design on this Kangxi plate originates from around the 1680s (so that’s the Qing dynasty) and belongs to the Famille Verte (Green Family) group of Chinese wares - so called because of the lush, turquoise-y green used as the primary colour. Credentials out of the way, this contemporary reproduction uses the traditional colours and motifs of its ancestors but spaces the patterns out to achieve an updated less-is-more style. If the original Famille Verte is a bustling farmers’ market, then this piece is more of a prim, suburban park.
As for uses, the reserved design means it suits a variety of aesthetics. Whether you’re after a modern-but-cosy family home or a retro ’60s vibe, this set will find its place almost anywhere if you give it a chance.
Care instructions: Dishwasher safe, although we recommend washing by hand to maintain these pieces for longer.
