Camilla Pasta Bowl, Green Garland

£110

Materials
Fine European Earthernware
Height
5.5 cm
Width
22 cm

A deep, wide bowl hand-painted in Caldas da Rainha — the pink and blue garland running the rim, generous enough for pasta, considered enough to stay on the table long after.

The Portuguese have always understood that a bowl for pasta needs width as much as depth — room for the spoon, room for the sauce, room for someone to help themselves twice without ceremony.
JJ uses this set of 4 every day for anything from crisps to salad.

Inspiration
The garland on this bowl has been running through Portuguese ceramics since before anyone thought to date it — field flowers threaded along a stem, moving rim to rim with the ease of something that belongs exactly where it is. JJ first encountered it not in a shop but on a table in the Minho, where it arrived with a fish stew and stayed through the afternoon, accumulating the particular authority that only hand-painted earthenware acquires in actual use. Portugal does not treat its ceramics as decorative objects. It treats them as part of the family.
Collectors Questions

Q: Is the pasta bowl only suited to pasta?

A: It's shaped with a deeper rim to hold pasta, sauce, and other wet dishes well, but there's nothing stopping it from working as a generous everyday bowl for soup, grain bowls, or salad — the shape is more versatile than the name suggests.

Q: Are pasta bowls dishwasher safe?

A: Yes, on a low-temperature or eco cycle (ideally ≤50–55°C) with a mild, non-aggressive detergent, with heated drying switched off. Given how often a pasta bowl tends to be used, hand-washing is the better long-term habit for keeping the glaze looking new.

Q: Does the pasta bowl work well for serving at the table, not just individual portions?

A: It can double as a small serving bowl for a side dish or a starter, particularly when a few are placed together at the centre of the table rather than one per setting.

Q: Would a set of pasta bowls make a good standalone gift?

A: Yes — it's a genuinely practical gift for anyone who cooks regularly, distinctive enough to notice but useful enough to reach for often, which is the best combination in a gift.
