Henri Matisse spent his winters in Nice, following the light south when the rest of France went grey. He sat at the edge of his bed in the Hôtel de la Méditerranée, watching the sun come in, picking up his brush. We think this is how he would have taken his lunch — plates full of colour, a table set with joy rather than formality.
The Buds in May plates are our homage to that instinct. Hand-painted in rich, expressive glazes on shaped stoneware, each one carries the slight variations that come from being made by a single pair of hands. The brushwork is visible. The glaze catches the light differently depending on where the plate sits. That is not inconsistency — that is how you know it is real.
At 22cm, they work beautifully as starter plates, lunch plates, or alongside a dinner plate for a more layered table. Food-safe and dishwasher-safe, because beautiful things are made to be used.
This is a plate for people who believe lunch deserves as much care as dinner.

Inspiration
The old artist sat on the edge of his bed, the familiar sunlight streaming into the shady hotel room. He picks up his brushes and turns to face the light.
Henri Matisse stayed at the Hôtel de la Méditerrannée in Nice every winter, following the sun down south. The sun bathes the city in light, heat and colour even when the rest of France is grey and lifeless. We fancy this is how Matisse would have liked to take his lunch at the Hotel, where the fantastic colours of these plates would be right at home. The subtle fade of the design is an ode to the thing Matisse loved most about Nice: the sun.
These flower bud plates promise beautiful new beginnings, lay the table for your loved ones, open the curtains and let the sunlight soak in.
