Cara Shell Dinner Plate, Green

EXCLUSIVE

£120

Materials
Fine European Earthernware
Width
26.5 cm

The shell motif arrived in European decorative arts long before Botticelli painted Venus, ultimately popularised by the ceramic workshops of Portugal, France, and Italy, where the painters captured the sense of freedom of the coast. The fan shell in particular — symmetrical, ribbed, opening like a small theatre curtain, has been running along the rims of the finest Portuguese earthenware since the eighteenth century.
