Enamel Ceiling Pendant Lampshade, Red

£82

Materials

An enamel ceiling pendant refers to old farmhouse kitchens and workshops. Historically utilitarian, this modern iteration is cast in iron and has a copper glaze. The ribbed, fluted shade catches light along its length, while a brass holder and braided textile cord maintain the vintage character.
It earns its keep over a kitchen island or table when hung solo, but grouped at staggered heights, three or four turn into a proper lighting moment.

Inspiration
Whether situated above a farmhouse table, a kitchen island, or clustered in a stairwell where the varying heights create charm, these enamel shades have a genuinely functional past. Found in farmhouses, factories and workshops, they were appreciated beyond their aesthetic appeal. The enamel, which is glass fused onto steel, is a highly durable material used in factories during the Industrial Revolution. It is highly heat resistant, the colour lasts for years, and it is known for its strength. Its particular shape also has a practical purpose: the shallow dome is normally filled with white ceramic, creating the most efficient projection of the light emitted from the bulb. This created bright, overhead lighting in spaces used for manufacturing. This is why they’re so often used in kitchens! "I like putting a genuinely utilitarian shape in a boldly unexpected colour," says JJ. "Hang three at different drops over a table, and it stops being a light fixture and becomes the architectural centre of the room."
Collectors Questions

Q: How do I clean a pendant light without damaging the enamel finish?

A: A soft, damp cloth is all it needs. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads entirely — the hand-enamelled iron surface is finished by hand and can be scratched or dulled by anything abrasive.

Q: What should I be checking on the fitting over time?

A: Check the fittings and the 3-pin wire regularly for any signs of wear or damage. Catching an issue early is the best way to keep a pendant light safe over years of use.

Q: What bulb does the pendant take, and what comes with it for hanging?

A: It takes an E27 bulb, 40W max. It comes with a 2m 3-pin wire and a ceiling cap, so the hanging hardware is included. If you're unsure about installation, we'd recommend a qualified electrician.

Q: Is the hand-enamelled finish likely to show wear differently to a painted metal shade?

A: Hand-enamelled iron is more durable than standard paint and ages gracefully, but it's still a finished surface rather than raw metal — gentle cleaning is what keeps it looking as good years in as it did on day one.
